Somatic yoga for hypermobility

by Emma Leonard (the_soma_space)

MoveWell yoga therapy student, teacher & practitioner of somatic yoga

As someone with hypermobility, in yoga classes I was often praised for my flexibility and told how “beautiful” my practice was. I was confused about what was right for my body. I would do the poses exactly as the teacher instructed and would be told that my form was “perfect.”

But I was in pain!

I thought yoga was supposed to be GOOD for me?! Supposed to help my mind-body connection., my self esteem, my self-love - but it felt very much the opposite. There was a disconnect between how the poses were “supposed” to look and how they felt in my body.

It was only when I learnt Somatic Yoga that I started finding freedom within the form of yoga poses. The more I experimented, the more I found what worked for me, in MY unique body.

The more I moved in that way, the more I began to trust in my body.

The more I trusted my body, the more I began to care for it - and even start loving it a little more!

I am SO incredibly proud of myself and how far I’ve journeyed!

It was a very, very long and painful process for me personally to get to this point.

Learning Somatic Yoga completely changed the way I move and care for my body.

I am SO passionate about this style of yoga because I have felt personally just how much it can impact your life - not just the way you move, but the way you live!

I teach because I want to guide students to find their own body sovereignty. I want others to experience their own body’s uniqueness and learn to trust the wisdom it holds.
