Ayurveda: Summer watermelon cooler

Ayurveda is the sister science to yoga & a way of life that reflects the 5 elements (earth, water, fire, air & space) & how each element influences our ‘self’ & the environment we live in. Each person has a unique constitution made up of the elements as doshas. Each dosha; Pitta, Vata & Kapha has distinct qualities and effects on our internal & external environments. In summer the fire element of pitta dosha is dominant in the environment. If this combines with dominant pitta dosha in the body the heat and energy created from pitta’s metabolic and biochemical processes we can ourselves become firey, irritable, distressed and dehydrated.

In ayurveda food is medicine and with good food (carefully selected according to the balance of doshas) medicine is rarely required.

Jane & Ush practice ayurveda & use its principles to guide their own nutritional, physical and emotional needs. We love to share this knowledge with you in our discussions, classes and blogs.

Here is our favourite watermelon cooler recipe - a great pitta pacifier for those times when the heat rises!

Watermelon is best taken on its own, as a great starter or refreshing drink.

  • 1 watermelon – 8 cups cubed (can include small white seeds – not black)

  • 1 pinch pink Himalayan rock salt – balances diuretic properties of watermelon

  • Juice from ½ fresh lime – provides freshness

  • Small sprig basil leaves – provides a mild bitterness & enhances the sweetness of the watermelon

  • ¼ tsp roasted cumin seed powder – aids digestion & prevents gassiness

Combine ingredients in heavy duty blender, blend and serve!

Garnish with fresh basil leaves and a pinch of roasted cumin seed powder

No water, sweetener or ice required – enjoy the fresh juice

Serves 2 – large glass
